A new study published in the obstetrics and gynecology journal BJOG, claiming that women drinking a glass of wine a day in their first three months of pregnancy may have better behaved children than those who abstain from alcohol or drink heavily, is potentially controversial and against the current medical advisories in most countries.
The researchers recorded the weekly drinking habits of women during the early stages of pregnancy, and then monitored the behavioural and emotional patterns of their children during their early teens. They found that children of mothers who drank in moderation had lower risk of becoming depressed or reacting aggressively, while mothers who didn't drink during their first trimester had trouble getting their children to behave properly.
For the purpose of the study the women were divided into three groups- non drinkers, moderate drinkers and heavy drinkers. The psychologists used a standard checklist procedure after forming these groups. Dr Monique Robinson, leader of the research says the study would help alleviate any guilt for women who had drunk alcohol before they found out they were pregnant, according to the report by Stuff.co.nz.
But Dr Robinson cautions pregnant mothers to stick to national guidelines, which in Australia recommend expectant mothers to refrain from taking alcohol and to discuss with their doctor. The guidelines suggest there is no safe level of drinking since moderation is a subjective term and that no period is safe.
Denmark which has done several studies on wine, alcohol and health advises pregnant mothers that they can have a glass of wine with their meal, but not every night. A maximum of four times a week, not on continuous days is recommended.
DelWine had conducted a quick random survey (even though statistically non-scientific) by talking to several Italian women both in and outside of the wine business at Vinitaly. The consensus was that the women were not too hung up about the issue but were well aware of the need to restrain and secondly, they would all have a glass or two a week with the meal, or at an evening out. DelWine recommends the doctor’s advice but a maximum of two glasses (120 mL) of red wine in a week, not at the same time.
Western Australia had conducted another study in early 2009 which had claimed that between 2-7 drinks a week caused no harm. The article on the study may be viewed at

There are also a few wines available in the Indian market which are low or no alcohol wines and are recommended if you love to drink wine. Torres makes one such wine- Natureo, details of which were given in an earlier article: http://www.indianwineacademy.com/item_4_337.aspx
