White Wine may Damage Teeth

A study conducted by German Researchers and reported in the Journal of Nutrition Research finds that the use of white wine over a long period may damage the teeth by attacking calcium and eroding enamel

The research finds Riesling can be most harmful as the pale wine can erode enamel far more than red wine because of very low ph levels.

In the lab, adult teeth soaked in white wine for a day had a loss of both calcium and mineral called phosphorus to depths of up to 60 micrometers in the enamel surface.

However, the study does not recommend that you need to give up drinking white wine totally. It says drinking wine along with food generates saliva, which in turn helps neutralize acidity.

Eating cheese at the same time may help counter the effects, but brushing your teeth after a night of drinking, after waiting for 30 minutes helps the enamel to recover and the damage is minimal.

The study was conducted by a team of researchers at Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz.

Meanwhile another study has suggested that of all alcoholic drinks, white wine had the biggest impact on women’s fertility in IVF.

Yet another study by the New York University College of Dentistry has revealed that the acid content of white wine causes it to stain teeth too; the same effect caused by red wine and certain teas.

The Worldwide White Wine Council will issue a new statement shortly.

Most wine experts concur that moderate drinking is the key.

Indian Wine Academy has always  recommended 1-2 glasses a day for women and 2-3 glasses a day for men on a regular basis, preferably with food, for maximum benefits and minimal negative effects-editor
