Dr. W Virgil Brown, a visitng US- based expert in lipidology has expressed scepticism about the studies reporting health benefits of wine for heart saying these studies are based on mere observation studies and not a scientific randomised trials.
"Frankly, the observations on wine are made after observing one group that drinks wine and another that doesn't. We don't know how healthy the second group is. Or what they were drinking instead of wine. So I would always exercise caution when I talk of wine and heart diseases," reportedly said the Georgian Dr Brown, who is the director of the division of arteriosclerosis and lipid metabolism, University School of Medicine, Atlanta. He is also the Editor in Chief of the Journal of Clinical Lipidology, the official magazine of the National Lipid Association
Dr Brown, who has been travelling across India and talking to doctors on the success story of the United States in reducing the incidence of heart diseases by 30% in a decade. He was in Chennai on Wednesday to speak to cardiologist and physicians.
The incidence of heart disease among Indians is much higher than others, possibly due to genetic predispositions, he said |
