Coming on the heels of a study last month that ascribed increases chances of breast cancer even with a glass of wine, is another one from scientists in Madrid and New York claiming that a glass of wine a day may double the risk of getting the shakes in later life
The condition usually found in old people and known as essential tremor, is often associated with alcoholism, Parkinson's disease or an overactive thyroid and affects 3 out of a 100 people in UK. But these scientists claim that the equivalent of a large glass of wine may be doubling their risk according to a report in Daily Mail,
The study was conducted by experts at New York's Columbia University on about 3300 people aged 65 and above who drank at least 3 units a day (equivalent of a large glass of wine)
The cause is believed to be the result of damage to brain cells and disrupted signaling between them called synapses.
Prof Ian Gilmore of the Alcohol Health Alliance said the study, published in the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry, 'underlines how important it is to stay within recommended limits and to adopt alcohol-free days'.
Yet, another new research findings from Northumbria University, suggested that a substance found in red wine actually enhanced people's mental functions.
The British National Health Service (NHS) advises that men should drink no more than 'three or four' units a day, while women should stick to 'two or three' a day.
Indian Wine Academy recommends to go by the NHS recommendations and also the recommendations by the US official medical authorities- of up to 2 glasses a day for men and one glass for a woman (5 glasses to a bottle-of 12.5% alcohol content.
